Tips for choosing the right castor wheel replacements

Load-bearing capacity

Your assembly needs to be up to specification to support both the weight of the trolley and the anticipated maximum weight of the load it will carry. Generally, a larger wheel size will be needed to distribute the weight evenly. Weight-bearing products are often manufactured in metals like cast iron and steel.

If you have flooring that might be damaged by bare metal castors, we have a selection of products that use tyres to soften the impact. The type of bearing also has an impact on load capacity. Wheels with stronger roller bearings are often the best option.

Tyre choices for replacement

  • Rubber tyres make a resilient and smooth-running surface coating for metal wheels. Less likely to damage hard flooring, we can supply products fitted with either solid rubber or elastic rubber tyres. Solid rubber tyre options mean that you will never suffer the inconvenience of a puncture. Elastic rubber tyres are more yielding to absorb bumps and jolts for smooth performance.
  • Plastic and nylon tyres are fitted on wheels designed for low to medium load-bearing capacity. Long-lasting and reliable, they are lightweight and can stand wet conditions without deteriorating. Using them helps avoid the scuffing marks and flat-spotting that you might get from rubber.
  • Polypropylene tyres are made from a thermoplastic polymer that has become popular in the wheel and castor manufacturing industry. Polypropylene is a robust material that is resistant to moisture, oil, and chemicals. It has a temperature operating window that goes from -20 right up to +60 degrees centigrade. With vibration, noise-dampening properties, and a high load capacity - this is a fantastic multi-purpose material.

Replacement wheels or replacement castors?

  • Replacement wheels: When your truck or trolley starts veering off in the wrong direction it is often due to worn out or slack bearings. The quick and convenient fix is to simply replace them with like-for-like, as greasing and replacing bearings, can be time-consuming. They are cost-effective and can be replaced in minutes without needing to replace the whole assembly.
  • Replacement castors: If you discover that yours are suffering from the effects of prolonged use and becoming bent and buckled, replacing the whole assembly is your best option. Some equipment utilises a combination of swivel, fixed and brake options - this is something to check before purchasing your replacements. Most individual products will offer these options.
